Autism care pathway determining the origins

It can be difficult for parents, teachers, and other care pathway givers to identify the issues that cause children with an autism/ ASD spectrum disorder to be irritated and act out.

This is due, in part, to the fact that many autistic/ ASD children and adults have trouble conveying their pain and anguish. To make matters worse, seeing an autism care pathway expert might take months, leaving the patient angry, agitated, and in physical discomfort.

The guidelines, develop care pathways as part of the ATN's federally funded role as the Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health and assist paediatricians and other primary care doctors in determining when an autistic person's emotional outbursts and other problematic behaviors are due to medical causes.

Autism What Next

"One of the most important things is to investigate medical disorders as potential reasons for these unpleasant and problematic behaviours," says ATN medical director Daniel Coury. Dr. Coury is the director of developmental and behavioural paediatrics at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. The hospital is one of 14 ATN facilities located throughout the United States and Canada.

When a toddler began reaching aggressively for his parents' throats, the mother and father assumed the boy was attempting to strangle them. After medications and behavior management failed to help the situation, the ATN doctor inquired whether the parents had seen any physical changes in their kid around the time he began grasping for their throats. They remembered his breath smelling unpleasant at times.

The youngster had terrible gastric reflux, it was discovered. Dr. Coury explained that he was attempting to notify them that his throat ached.

The new asd pathway directs clinicians not just to assessing and treating potential medical reasons for behaviour. It also aids in the assessment of common autism-related concerns such as communication challenges, psychological and social stress, problematic behaviour patterns, and co-occurring psychiatric illnesses.

Autism/ ASD is associated with an extremely high risk of various physical and mental health issues, including gastrointestinal pain, disrupted sleep, seizures, anxiety, and depression, according to research.

The route also instructs clinicians on how to collaborate with family members, teachers, and other caregivers to address underlying issues, and it includes clear markers for referral to medical and behavioral care specialists.
